− On check in, we were asked for 50 pounds deposit a night, told it was to cover the minibar and would be returned. This is common in London and I paid 100 for 2 nights. On check out I was presented a bill to sign without comment and asked to sign it. They asked if I had used the mini bar and I said no. We never use it. I knew I owed for a breakfast and was owed about 40 pounds. I checked the bill carefully and saw they intended to pay me back 2 pounds. When I asked why, I was told that the rest was added to the room bills (with seemingly random percentage amounts) as a "staff charge". When I asked why, since that never happens in London and we had paid a charge for the room fixed in advance, they changed their comment to call it a "discretionary room/staff charge". So, in effect, they just added a chunk of my deposit to the bill, and didn't tell me. This "staff charge" is mentioned nowhere on their literature, or on Booking.com or anywhere else.
